Basin Harbor family timeline

The First Drop
Ardelia Beach
She opened a farmhouse to strangers. They came to escape the city. They found something harder to leave.
Her Ripple
Every guest who has ever stood at the edge of that lake and felt, inexplicably, like it was home.
-
The Second Drop
Allen Penfield (A.P.) Beach
AP “He arrived as a UVM sophomore to work for his great-aunt Ardelia. The same year he arrived, she died. He could have walked away but instead bought out the remaining interest in Basin Harbor and never really left. He built the cottages by hand, with each one being different, using tree stumps as supports and Vermont stone for the facades. He built every door and every window himself. He started the fresh food farm in 1912, the golf course in 1927, the children’s program, the dance hall, and the airfield. When his cooks left, he learned to cook. He rode horses until the day he died at 77.”
His Ripple
Nearly everything you see on this property.
-
Hattie Beach
After Ardelia, the torch passed to A.P. Beach and his wife, Harriet “Hattie” Beach. If Ardelia built the walls, Hattie built the culture. Hattie was the definition of hospitality. Family legend has it that when the resort was full, Hattie and her four children would move out of their home, Sunnypines, just so guests had a place to stay. While Mom managed the resort, the kids ran a candy stand in what is now the Sunnypines Garden. She was called the “keystone in the arch” of the family business. To Hattie, Basin Harbor wasn’t just a resort; it was a home she opened to the world.
Her Ripple
Every guest who has ever felt, upon arrival, that someone was genuinely glad they came.
-
The Third Drop
Bob Beach, Sr.
Bob Beach Sr. was the consummate host. He helped shape Basin Harbor into the cherished family destination guests know today. As a third-generation steward of the property, he carried forward the Beach family’s enduring commitment to warm hospitality, thoughtful stewardship, and creating meaningful experiences on the shores of Lake Champlain.
His Ripple
His embodiment of hospitality done right, always with a ready smile and a laugh.
-
Merle Beach
For generations, Merle Beach personified the feeling you got when you visited Basin Harbor. Her children, Pennie and Bob, often said their mother’s smile could light up a room. But it wasn’t just the smile. It was the way she made an entire place feel warmer simply by being in it. That’s what the best hosts do. They don’t just fill a space — they transform it. They’re the reason certain places feel like home, even when they’re not yours. Merle’s warmth lives on in every connection made here, every family that returns year after year, every guest who leaves feeling like they belong.
Her Ripple
The feeling of home that greets you before you’ve even unpacked.
-
The Fourth Drop
Bob Beach, Jr.
Bob’s secret sauce is the way he connects with people. Every single day he has conversations with guests that really mean something — to him and to them. His commitment as steward to this property knows no bounds.
His Ripple
He is the institutional memory of Basin Harbor and the Lake Champlain region, and he is most often seen in his golf cart with his two golden retrievers.
-
The Fourth Drop
Pennie Beach
She began her career as a young girl in the stables, drawn exclusively to horses over golf or tennis, and today oversees the entire operation with the same focus and dedication she has always had.
Her Ripple
The quiet belief that Basin Harbor slows time down and if it stops doing that, something essential will have been lost. “The longer we can keep it the way it is, the more special it will become.”
-
The Fourth Drop
Wendy Beach
She first came to Basin Harbor as a child, hand in hand with her family, wide-eyed and enchanted. She would return years later, but this time as part of the family that calls it home, and has never left. Every day she works with quiet devotion to ensure Basin Harbor endures for the next generation, because she knows, more deeply than most, what it would mean to lose it.
Her Ripple
Two children raised inside a living legacy, learning what it means to care for something bigger than yourself.
-
The Fourth Drop
Sarah Morris
She grew up here — she knows which road to run for the most sweeping pastoral views, which rocks to paddle out to for the finest seat in the house. Having spent a lifetime absorbing every corner of this place, she sees Basin Harbor for what it truly is: a playground without age limit.
Her Ripple
Still forming, but already she is the person guests find when they want to understand where to go, what to do, and how to make the most of a place she’s loved since before she could name the feeling.
-
The Fifth Drop
Merle and Dan Beach
They understood early that everyone at Basin Harbor is valuable, that hard work is non-negotiable, and that a smile and a welcoming ear are the two most important things you can offer another person. They already know something most people spend a lifetime searching for: they know exactly where they belong.
Their Ripple
Still forming and the most breathtaking waves are yet to come. Stay tuned.

The Ambassadors
Skipper & Piper
Preceded by the legendary Maritime, Simba, Fanny, and Rosie, each one indisputably, irrefutably the best dog ever, they carry on a tradition as cherished as any at Basin Harbor. They know the finest swimming spots before anyone else does and have never once met a squirrel they couldn’t chase or a guest they couldn’t charm. After all, the best family stories have always had paw prints in them.
Their Ripple
Immeasurable, unconditional, and forever wagging.
